NECBAC 45th Anniversary Celebration
March 8, 2021
Dear NECBAC partners,
Thank you for celebrating 45 years of NECBAC history with us! We mark this anniversary to not just remember our storied past, but to shape the next 45 years of college admission practice. The collaboration made possible by NECBAC has transformed the field of college admission. From a 1978 pamphlet: “NECBAC was founded by three admission counselors from similar institutions who felt a deep concern for the level of guidance available to students of color who were interested in pursuing a post-secondary education.” At NECBAC, we still feel a deep concern for the disproportionate college going rates for students of color. In the last year, we’ve faced a global pandemic and racial justice movement that have heightened and highlighted the educational, social, and economic gap in higher education.
But, in the last 45 years, NECBAC has made significant strides in creating more targeted outreach programs and more equitable internal systems that have yielded more diverse student populations on college campuses. We have learned from each other’s successes and experiences, and we’ve defined best practices together. We’ve leaned on each other for support, growth, and validation. NECBAC has more than three meetings a year; it’s a home. We are more than a group of professionals who share the same goals; we’re a family.
The challenges of the past year have proven what we at NECBAC have known for 45 years: our work is necessary. We come together to celebrate our many achievements, and we look forward to NECBAC’s role in the fight against systemic racism and the social injustices that continue to create barriers for students of color.
45 years ago, we set out to expand access to higher education in the United States. Today, we celebrate the collaborations that have helped us achieve our goals, and look to a brighter future.
