NECBAC Announces 2019 Book Scholarship Recipients

November 6, 2019

Williamstown, MA – The Northeast Consortium Bridging Access to College (NECBAC) officially named a select group of high school graduates as Book Scholarship recipients for the 2019-2020 academic year. In addition, the NECBAC membership unanimously decided to name one of the book scholarships in celebration of Clifford Thornton’s retirement from Wesleyan University, his contributions to the admission field, and NECBAC itself.

After the most competitive application process in NECBAC scholarship history with over 200 applicants, 5 deserving students were awarded $500. Our winners are:

  • Nyla Guadalupe from Bronx, NY – Amherst College
  • Shandira Soto from Boston, MA – Connecticut College
  • Edwin Genece from Somers, CT – Saint Michael’s College
  • Carlos Arias from Pawtucket, RI – Stonehill College
  • Chris-Ann Walker from Randolph, MA – Wesleyan University

Yavuz Kiremit,  Director of Admission at Lasell University, served on the selection committee commented, “NECBAC received a record number of Book Scholarship applications for 2019. The applicant pool was incredibly strong this year with the average GPA of our applicants over a 3.5 and it made choosing only five recipients incredibly difficult. The committee believes we have chosen the five strongest applicants and are excited to offer each student with a $1,000 scholarship.

NECBAC is a chartered, non-profit organization of professional admission representatives who are committed to access and affiliated with four-year private colleges and universities in the Northeast. In line with this mission, NECBAC scholarship recipients were all seniors who will matriculate to a NECBAC member institution. More information about the application process can be found at
